18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer-- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. 20 Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife? 21 For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths. 22 The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. 23 He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.
"'For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. Consequently they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.'"
Millions and millions of marriages are defiled and destroyed each year because of adultery. You know of marriages ruined by adultery.
Adultery destroys families.
Broken marriages lead to broken families. There are many innocent victims, especially the children.
Adultery denies love.
People say they commit adultery because of love. "We just fell in love." It really is lust. 'Eros' - erotic love.
It is not 'agape' - God's love, which looks for the highest good for people. Since adultery only hurts all involved, it is not agape love.
Adultery degrades people.
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? 29 So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
Emotionally - The toll of suffering is huge.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.
What to do.
Seek God's help with temptation.
18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'
Seek God's forgiveness if you have committed adultery.
10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
Adultery is not harmless.
If Jesus had not been there, the woman would have been stoned to death. Adultery is still a spiritual death-trap.
