We Are Salt
By Pastor John

Matthew 5:13-15
13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

The Good News - We Are Salt
13 "You are the salt of the earth.

Salt influences just about everything it touches.

Each of us can have a big influence on others.

Salt adds flavor

The Holy Spirit has given us fruit which blesses the lives of others - Love, Joy, Peace, Kindness, etc.

Salt creates thirst.
Edward Kimball is probably not known to you. He lived over a hundred years ago. He was a Sunday school teacher in Boston, where a young teenager became part of his class. The young man was a country boy. He didn't know the ways of the city or of the church. But he came to Kimball's Sunday school class.

When the teen first came to his class, Edward Kimball handed him a Bible. When Mr. Kimball said, "Turn to the Gospel of John," the country boy didn't know how to find the Gospel of John. Edward Kimball recognized what was happening, and while the other boys were snickering, he opened the Bible to the Gospel of John and handed it back. When he asked the boys to read, the country boy fumbled as he read.

But Edward Kimball had a big perspective, and he saw possibilities in the boy. Kimball worked with him, and after some months he went down to the store where the boy was working, went into the back room where he was stacking boxes, and led Dwight to Jesus Christ. That was the beginning of the ministry of Dwight L. Moody, this continent's greatest evangelist during the 19th century.

You didn't know Edward Kimball, an obscure Sunday school teacher who had a vision. But his vision transformed a young man who became a great instrument of God to reach people for Christ.

-- Gordon Johnson, "Finding Significance in Obscurity," Preaching Today, Tape No. 82.

Salt stings in a wound.
The Gospel stings in a sinful heart, it pricks the conscience.

Salt melts ice.
The Lord used my wife's constant display of Christian love, and her prayers, to melt my heart and bring me to Him.

Salt preserves.
Salt renders food pleasant and palatable, and preserves from putrefaction. So Christians, by their lives and instructions, are to keep the world from entire moral corruption. By bringing down the blessing of God in answer to their prayers, and by their influence and example, they save the world from universal vice and crime.  Albert Barnes

The Bad News
Salt that isn't influencing, which isn't salty, is worthless and is thrown out.

But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

We Are Light
14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Light Exposes

Light illuminates

I believe in Christianity as I believe the Sun has risen, not only because I see it but because by it I see everything else.
-- C.S. Lewis in The Weight of Glory.  Christianity Today, Vol. 34, no. 13.

Don't Hide Your Light
15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Am I Making a Difference?
Galatians 6:9-10
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
