1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them-- do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"
Repentance is turning away from sin, and turning to the Lord in faith. We must not hang onto our sins. We must abandon our sins, and abandon ourselves to God. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
The Teaching of Peter
38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,
The Teaching of Paul
20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.
God's Word to the Church in Ephesus
4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. 5 Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.
Sometimes whole churches need to repent (turn around). Ephesus needed to turn back to its first love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus warned that without repentance, the church would die. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.
God's Word to the Church in Sardis
1 "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.
Sardis needed to turn away from dead deeds (worldly, sinful actions) to a life of obedience to the Lord. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent.
God's Word to Us
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent.
2 Corinthians 7:10
10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
2 Peter 3:9
9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
