The Heart of Christ
By Pastor John

Luke 9:51-56
51 And it came about, when the days were approaching for His ascension, that He resolutely set His face to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him. And they went, and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make arrangements for Him. 53 And they did not receive Him, because He was journeying with His face toward Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples James and John saw {this,} they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" 55 But He turned and rebuked them, [and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; 56 for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them."] And they went on to another village. (NAS)

Jesus knew it was time to fulfill His mission. He "set His face" with a set purpose to go to Jerusalem. The shortest way from Galilee to Jerusalem was through Samaria. He sent messengers to go ahead and get permission to travel through Samaria.

The Samaritans were a mixed race of Jews and Assyrians. They established their worship center on Mt. Gerizim. In Jesus' time the Jews hated the Samaritans and equated them on the same level as dogs. The Samaritans did not associate with the Jews.

The Hearts of James and John
Uncaring about the souls of the people
"You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;"

The Samaritans didn't like them, and they didn't like the Samaritans.

Apathy about others reigns in many today. Most Christians have never tried to lead another person to Christ. Many never even think about it.

The Heart of Christ

"the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them."

Christ was on His way to the cross to die for the sin of all people.
"He is not willing that any perish, but that all come to repentance."

The Example of Jonah, who hated the people of Nineveh, and didn't want to give them God's message.
Nineveh = Mosul, Iraq

The Hearts of the Samaritans

They were spared the fire that day, but not always.

Matthew 13:40-42
40 "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

If you push Christ away, push Christ away - in eternity, Christ will be far away.
