Simeon was waiting. The Lord had stirred up in him a holy anticipation. Simeon couldn't wait to see what the Lord had promised.
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

Simeon knew the prophecies about the coming of the Messiah.
The Messiah would come and emerge victorious
Genesis 3:15
"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

The Messiah would come from the tribe of Judah.
Genesis 49:10
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.

The Messiah would be born of a virgin.
Isaiah 7:14
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."

That the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
Micah 5:2-4
2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." 3 Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor gives birth and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. 4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.

Simeon Knew What the Holy Spirit Had Said to Him
26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

To Simeon, this was not only a Gift Worth Waiting For, but a Gift Worth Receiving.
29 "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all people, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel."

When Jesus came to him, he was overjoyed.  He believed when he saw Jesus.

"Christmas and salvation began in the heart of God. It is complete only when it reaches the heart of man.Though Christ a thousand times in Bethlehem be born, If he's not born in thee thy soul is still forlorn." Angelus Silesius (1624-1677)

When you believe in Jesus, you can die and still live.
29 "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace.

The Gift Worth Waiting For
By Pastor John
Luke 2:25-35
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all people, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." 33 The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too."
