The Battle With Doubt and Fear
By Pastor John

Joshua 1:5-9
5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6  "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

Even Abraham our forefather of faith doubted and feared.
During the famine in Canaan, Abraham doubted the promise of God in Egypt and introduced his wife as his sister (Genesis 12:13)
Abraham doubted God's promise of a son by Sarah, and took Hagar to have a son with her, Ishmael.  (Genesis 16:2,3)

The disciples of Jesus doubted and feared.
Peter heard the call of Jesus to "come," and walked on the water. Then he began to doubt and sank like a rock.

Philip and Andrew at Bethsaida (John 6:5,6)
              (1)     Philip doubted completely (John 6:7)
              (2)     Andrew believed even though he had some doubts (John 6:8,9)

John 6:5-9
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 9 "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"

Thomas doubted until he saw and touched Jesus for himself.

Help me overcome my unbelief
Mark 9:21-24
21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?" "From childhood," he answered. 22 "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." 23 "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." 24 Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"

Faith comes as we look to God.
God requested a few things of Joshua

Obey the Lord.
6 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

Meditate on the God's Word
8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Hear the Lord's word (rhema) that brings faith. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word (rhema) of God."
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

Conclusion: Every person has a painful fight with doubt and fear in their soul. Faith doesn't mean there is no doubt and fear. It means believing by overcoming doubt and fear.
