4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word (rhema) that comes from the mouth of God.'"
The Greek word for "word" here is not the usual "logos." It is "rhema," which is a word spoken to an individual or group. The Bible is "logos," the general Word of God. A verse in the Bible that God uses to move you to faith and action - that is "rhema."
Faith comes when the Lord speaks a word (rhema) to our heart.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word (rhema) of Christ.
The example of Peter walking on the water.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
Any other time, if Peter had tried to walk on water, he would have sunk like a rock. But when Jesus says "come," Peter has faith to walk on the water, if only briefly, until his faith fails. This faith comes from hearing a word (rhema) from Jesus Christ.
The example of the early disciples leaving everything to follow Jesus
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Imagine leaving your family, your home, and your livelihood to follow a stranger who only said, "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." The Word (rhema) from Jesus gave them immediate faith to follow Him.
If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, there was a time when Jesus Christ spoke a word (rhema) to you from scripture, and you believed. People don't come to faith in the Lord through reasoning and weighing out pros and cons, they come through a word (rhema) spoken by Christ that brings faith.
A word (rhema) is always possible.
37 For nothing is impossible with God."
The word rhema is part of this verse in the Greek, but is not translated to the English. The verse might be better translated, "For no word (rhema) is impossible with God."
The example of the miraculous catch of fish.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." 5 Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so (rhema), I will let down the nets." 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
The example of Chris's word (rhema) about Peter's denials and the crowing of the rooster
75 Then Peter remembered the word (rhema) Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Words (rhema) from the Lord bring life.
63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words (rhema) I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words (rhema) of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
47 He who belongs to God hears what God says (rhema). The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."
10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words (rhema) I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
7 If you remain in me and my words (rhema) remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word (rhema) of God.
3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word (rhema). After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
1 Peter 1:24-25
24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word (rhema) of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word (rhema) that was preached to you.
