One Month to Live - part 1
By Pastor John

Matthew 16:21-26
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

What would your reaction be if God revealed to you that if you followed Him and served Him, that you would be martyred in one month?

Would you question His ways, thinking you know better?
Would you back away from following Him, thinking that the price was too high?
Would you sulk, and cry, and beg for deliverance?
Or, would you accept His will, and continue to serve and obey Him?

We have about one month until Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday.  Jesus knew He was going to the cross to die. This series of sermon outlines is on how Jesus lived that last month, and how we must live as well.

Jesus Reveals What Must Happen
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

Jesus had to suffer and die, and be raised from the dead.

Peter Rebukes Jesus!
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

and began to rebuke Him - It is foolish to argue with the Lord. We must always take the Lord's side. The Lord's side is always the right side.  If someone is contending with God, and rebuking Him, that person is always on the wrong side. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"

"Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." The things of men are temporal, here and now: the things of God are eternal.

The Must of the Cross
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.

If Jesus had refused to go to the cross, He would have lived for many more years as a man, without the power of God, and he would have died.  There would have been no resurrection unto power. We also follow Jesus in taking up our cross, and follow Jesus in dying to ourselves.

"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.
Many will save their lives, only to lose their lives.
Many will lose their lives, only to live eternally with Christ.

26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

Which is worth more to you?  The riches of the world, or your own soul.  Your eternity will depend on the answer.
