Once for All
By Karen L. Mechtly

Hebrews 10:11-14
Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest (Jesus) had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

Housework is a frustrating job. I mop, I dust, I vacuum. And then no matter how thorough I am, a few days later I have to do the same things all over again! Though housework pales in comparison, I can relate to the ancient Israelites. Every time they turned around, they were required to offer a sacrifice. There were daily sacrifices and Sabbath Day sacrifices, and every year on the Day of Atonement they had to confess all their sins and offer more sacrifices. No matter how thoroughly they confessed their sins or how meticulously they followed their regulations, there was always another sacrifice to offer. How frustrating.

But then Jesus Christ came into the world. His mission was to die on Calvary as a sacrifice "once for all." Now there was no need to repeat the animal sacrifices daily, weekly or yearly. Why? The writer of Hebrews tells us why. The sacrifice of bulls and goats could never atone for sin. But a sinless Jesus Christ could. By shedding His precious blood He paid for our sin for all time. Hallelujah!

Father, thank You for sending Your son pay my debt of sin.
