Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.
Every Trekkie knows Spock's famous saying, "Live long and prosper." He accompanies it with his split finger hand signal that not everyone can master.
However, those words did not originate with Spock. They are found in the Bible, in the book of Deuteronomy. There Moses is giving his final charge to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land that God has led them to. In spite of their poor record of obedience, Moses tells them that God will give them prosperity and long life, if only they will walk in His ways. Although they pledged to do exactly that, as we read the Bible, we know many were faithless and turned away from God's blessings.
We, as Christians, are offered prosperity and a long life, too. In Ephesians 6:2, Paul writes, "Honor your father and mother" -- which is the first commandment with a promise -- "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."
Obey God and you will live long and prosper.
Heavenly Father, Help me to obey all of your commandments, and especially the one to honor my parents.
