In the Midst of a Famine
By Pastor John

Amos 8:11-14
11 "The days are coming," declares the Sovereign LORD, "when I will send a famine through the land -- not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. 12 Men will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it. 13 "In that day "the lovely young women and strong young men will faint because of thirst. 14 They who swear by the shame of Samaria, or say, 'As surely as your god lives, O Dan,' or, 'As surely as the god of Beersheba lives'-- they will fall, never to rise again."

This prophecy is being fulfilled in our time.  Today we are in the midst of a "famine of  hearing the words of the Lord."

In the United States today, there is no shortage of the Scriptures. Every household, it seems, has at least two or three Bibles. The gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed in thousands of churches across the land, and Christian radio and television programs carry the gospel over the airwaves.

Yet millions of people are dying for lack of hearing the words of God. There is a spiritual famine happening all around us. Our friends, relatives, and coworkers are starving for lack of spiritual food.

How do we know such a famine is occurring?  Look at the Word in Amos once again. Don't we all know people who are wandering, staggering around to and fro, looking for meaning in life, and not finding it?  People are frantically searching for something that will make them happy, something that will bring purpose to their lives.  They are trying drugs, sex, witchcraft, eastern religions, money, alcohol, anything that might bring satisfaction - but they are not finding it. It is a sign of famine.

The Word in Amos also tells us that young people will faint because of the famine. In the United States today, the number-two cause of death is suicide, and the numbers are growing.  Our young people are fainting left and right.  It is a sign of famine.

Finally, the Word in Amos tells us that men and women will turn to false "gods" only to fall - and never rise again. In our culture the gods of fame, fortune, self-gratification, and materialism are being worshipped as never before.  The god of technology, the god of pleasure, the god of success - all have legions of devotees. But people are falling, never to rise to eternal life. Millions are dying without ever having found Him who brings true satisfaction and life eternal. It is the grimmest sign of famine.

But what can we do? First, we must get personally involved. We can't wait someone else to do the job.  It will take all of us.  Imagine what would happen if every Christian prayed daily for three unsaved friends or relatives and was willing to lovingly present the truth of Jesus Christ to these people over a period of time. The results would be powerful.  Multitudes of people would be saved. I know this works, for it is by this method that I found Jesus Christ. Several people prayed for me every day for years - and the Lord answered their prayers.

Start today. Choose three unsaved people and begin praying fervently for them. Take every opportunity to tell them and show them about the love of Christ. And expect a blessing as you bring food to a starving person.

1 Timothy 2:1-4
1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone - 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
