High and Exalted
By Pastor John

Isaiah 6:1-8
1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5  "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." 6  Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

Isaiah saw how holy and glorious the Lord is.  This was a life-changing experience. For the rest of his life, Isaiah would serve the Lord as a prophet - usually as a prophet of judgment on the sin and rebellion of Judah.

God is still the same.

Things I learn from this passage and others like it.

The Lord is my God and King (seated on a throne).
He is high and exalted. He is infinitely greater than I am. He "is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."

The Lord is Holy, holy, holy.
This emphasis is found often in God's word.  He is not just holy, He is Holy, holy, holy.

I, like Isaiah, am sinful.
5 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." When we draw close to God, and God draws close to us, we begin to realize how sinful we are, and how holy God is.  But we don't have to feel it for it to be true.  God is absolutely holy, and we are sinners.

Isaiah 29:13
The Lord says: "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

I can never blame the Lord for anything.
He is always just, always faithful, perfect in all His ways. I am the one who is imperfect and unfaithful.  The Lord has never failed me, but I have failed Him.

The Lord has atoned for my sin.
My sin has been forgiven. 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."

The Lord is not my errand boy.  I am His errand boy.
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
I do not devise my own plans and ask God to bless them.  He tells me what to do, and I try to obey.

"Dear Lord, You are High and Exalted. Help me to submit to Your Lordship."
