Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The above verses are my "life verses." I chose them as a freshman at Bible college. Everyone seemed to have a life verse, so I picked one, too. Thankfully, the spirit was leading me. That is the only way I can explain how I chose them. Little did I know, as a blessed, naive eighteen-year-old, what trials I would face. Yet these verses have been such a comfort to me over the years.
The Lord used these verses to console me during the nine months my beautiful daughter fought a losing battle against bone cancer. I would whisper them in the dark of night, and was able to sleep with the peace they afforded. And although at times I could not pray, I could recite these verses that I had memorized so long ago.
They were constantly on my mind when my son was on the front line in Iraq with the first group of soldiers who entered that country in 2003. The verses calmed my heart two years later when he returned for his second deployment. I praise God because He not only guarded my son during both of his tours in Iraq, He also guarded my heart and mind here at home.
Today we face many uncertainties. Our economy is weak, our country is sharply divided, and the whole world seems to be falling apart. Every day we hear of wars and fighting. Once again, I need to pray these verses and experience the peace that only God can give.
Dear God, Thank you for leading me to these verses so many years ago. Thank you for the peace that only you can bring.
