31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
There are several different meanings of the word "free." All are true in Christ.
1. "Free," meaning no cost.
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (NAS)
Note that it is the 'wages of sin' are earned. But God's salvation is a free gift.
2. "Free," meaning delivered from.
1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
3. "Free," meaning the absence of something.
Fat free, Drug free
1 Timothy 5:22
….keep yourself free from sin. (NAS)
5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
4. "Free," meaning free to choose.
1 Peter 2:16
16 Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.
