For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (NIV)
Warren, a family friend, is an inspiration to me. He was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and given only a few months to live. But he is not wallowing in self-pity or asking "Why me?" Instead, he is asking God to give him enough energy to continue both his Bible Study with prison inmates and his service as a Gideon representative as long as possible. He is relying on God's strength, not his own, to get through each day.
Like the Apostle Paul so many years before him, Warren knows his departure from this world will be soon. But, as long as he remains here, he wants to make his life count for Christ. Paul wrote letters from his prison cell that became books of the New Testament, right up to the end of his life. Today, Warren is visiting men in prison and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, probably using these same books written by Paul.
At the end of his life here on earth, Warren wants to echo Paul's words: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race and I have kept the faith." May we all have this goal in mind as live our life each day.
