34 "It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. 35 "Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming-- in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning -- 36 "lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. 37 "And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!"
The Man is Christ, and this passage is talking about His return. Just before sharing the above parable, Jesus talked about His second coming.
26 "At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. 28 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 32 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.
The Church on earth is Christ's house.
34 "It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.
He is the chief cornerstone of it. He is the foundation. If it were not for the foundation, the whole house would fall into ruins - the floods and the winds would sweep it away. If it were not for Christ, all believers would be swept away by God's judgement; but we are rooted and built up in Him. We form His house.
He is the builder of it. The Bible calls us "living stones." And everyone has been cut, hewn, and placed into His house by the hands of Christ.
His family is in it.
Christ is like a man who has gone on a long journey.
He has left His house and His family to ascend to Heaven. Why?
He has gone to prepare a place for us
2 "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
He has gone so that He could send a Helper.
7 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
He has gone to intercede for us
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
All Christ's people are servants, and have their work assigned to them, vs. 34.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Christ is coming again, suddenly, at a time we don't know.
The doorkeepers should watch - ministers, Christian workers.
Working to bring souls into the house before the master returns, knowing it could be any moment.
All Christians should watch
Watching that you are not found in sin. Or fruitless. Or without oil (the fulness of the Spirit.) Matthew 25.
