We are often comparing ourselves against other people. That is what the Pharisee was doing.

We think we are better because we do not do what others do.
11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men-- robbers, evildoers, adulterers-- or even like this tax collector.

I am not a robber, not an evildoer, not an adulterer, --- not a tax collector. I don't reach into people's pockets and take their money.  I am better.

We think we are better because we do something that others don't do.
12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

I fast. I tithe. God wants me to do these things. I am better.

James 2:10
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

In God's eyes all are equally guilty. We are all robbers, evildoers, and adulterers. We are all woefully short of God's standard.

Romans 3:23
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

To think we are better than others because of what we do or don't do is nothing but the sin of pride. We are deserving of punishment, not praise, from God. Pride is the sin of Satan.

The tax collector knew he was a sinner.
13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

He was justified by grace
Ephrsians 2:8-9
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

In a believer, every good thing comes from Jesus Christ
1 Corinthians 1:30-31
30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-- that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

Christ alone is our wisdom from God
Christ alone is our righteousness
Christ alone is our holiness
Christ alone is our redemption
31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

From Christ alone comes our fruitfulness
John 15:5
5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Christ Alone
By Pastor John
Luke 18:10-14
10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men-- robbers, evildoers, adulterers-- or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' 13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' 14 "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
