Blessed are Those Who Hunger and Thirst After Righteousness
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."
Hungering and Thirsting after Righteousness
The desire for righteousness is a desire to be right with God, a desire to get rid of sin, because sin is that which comes between us and God, keeping us from knowledge of God, and all that is possible to us and for us with God and from God. - D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
David declared, "O God, Thou art my God," but continued, "I shall seek Thee earnestly; my soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water" (Psalm 63:1).
John Darby wrote, "To be hungry is not enough; I must be really starving to know what is in God's heart toward me. When the prodigal son was hungry, he went to feed on the husks, but when he was starving, he turned to his father."
.. for they will be filled.
God satisfies those who seek and love Him.
9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
Jesus said, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst"
The blessings of Righteousness
For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry.
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.
A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all.
The power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.
I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
1 Peter 3:12
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
True Righteousness Comes Only Through Jesus Christ
1 Corinthians 1:30-31
30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God -- that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
2 Corinthians 5:20-21
20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"
