A Wake Up Call

Revelation 3:1-6
1 "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

The Lord Jesus appeared to John while he was in exile on the Isle of Patmos. He dictates letters to be sent to seven different churches.  In each church, He gives His evaluation of them, and tells them what they need to do.

Sardis
"To the angel of the church in Sardis write:
Angel = messenger.  Some think this is a literal angel, some think it is the pastor of the church.

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.
Seven Spirits - the Holy Spirit (7is perfection) working in each church.
Seven stars - Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

Sardis has a good reputation with people, but the Lord says they are dead.
I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

A church may have a reputation of being alive. But what we and others think doesn't matter.  All that matters is what the Lord thinks. He says to Sardis, I know your deeds - you are dead.

Wake Up!
2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.

Things aren't right in the Lord's eyes. There is some sin and rebellion. They are not doing the works that God wants them to do.

But there is hope. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die

Some in Sardis are doing fine
4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy.

They have not stained their clothes with sin.  They are commended by the Lord.

Steps to strengthening the church
2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. 3    Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent.

Wake Up - Stop slumbering. Get serious about walking closely with the Lord.

Remember what you have received and heard - what the Scriptures say, the instruction God has given us to live by. Faith, prayer, worship, praise, witnessing.

Obey it - live for the Lord, to please Him and serve Him in all things. Obedience to the Lord in everything.

Repent - Turn away from sin. Turn away from your ways, and turn to the Lord's ways. Seek the Lord instead of seeking the things of the world.

God will discipline as harshly as is needed.
But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

Eternal blessings
5 He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
