And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. "He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." (NIV)
We recently had to put out beloved 15-year-old dog TJ "to sleep." In his final years he developed many health problems. Although we miss him very much, we made the difficult, but right decision. Sensing my sorrow, my youngest grandson put his little hand on mine and said, "I will buy you a new TJ." While his precious words melted my heart, I know there is no way to replace the "old" TJ.
However, God has promised that He will replace the old things in our lives. When we accept Christ as our Savior, we become a new creation (II Corinthians 5:17). The old lusts and desires are replaced with a hunger for things of God. He also puts a new song into our hearts (Psalm 40:3) and infills us with a new spirit (Ezekiel 11:19). The writer of Hebrews assures us that we live under a new covenant of grace instead of the old covenant of law.
All these changes are great, but there is more. The ultimate "new thing" we have to look forward to is life with God where He will make everything new. In this new world there will be no more crying, no more death and no more pain. What a promise to look forward to!
Dear Lord, Help me look forward to the new heaven and new earth where I will dwell with You.
